Ljubljana Library

Library of the Faculty of Theology is an academic library. In accordance with its mission, it's activities assists the study and research processes. First of all it is designed for students, university lecturers, university collaborators an all interested in humanistics and theology. The majority of library's stock consist of theological books and journals. Besides a good deal of library's stock covers the fields of humanities and social sciences.

With the foundation of the University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Theology was one of it's cofounders, the direction of the faculty decided to establish an »central theological library«. It was meant to be the central library for seminaries, which would keep only the indispensable literature. The heads of seminaries were heads of the library. In the year 1920 two small rooms in the second floor of the former Collegium Aloysianum were arranged for the library. The funds for books wer supplied by the university budget. At the same time the library of the Theological Academy was established. The academy published Theological Quarterly and many books were acquired by exchange.
After the Second World War the seminaries' libraries and the library of the Theological Academy united into one library. It's rooms were in the rooms of today's dean's office and secreatary's office. In spite of unfavourable circumstances and modest resources for buying books (Faculty of Theology was expelled from the University), the faculty and librarians succeeded in following new trends and progress in theology. In time these rooms too turned out to be too narrow.

In the academic year 1991/1992 the library moved into the first floor of the former Biotechnical Faculty. Two great reading rooms were arranged, then an reference library in two rooms, lending office at the entrance, room for librarians' work and an large depot for books. The Faculty again was incorporatet into the University and that meant much more money for books and journals. Besides the library stock was enlarged by legacies and donations. Again new space was needed.

The present solution is radical and permanent. In one large room in the third floor reading room, reference library and loan office were established. Below (in the 2nd floor) there is a collection of newer literature and depot for journals. Rooms in the first floor were reshaped into a large depot and there will be place enough for additional 100.000 books. Enough for future decades.
For the time being the library holdings comprise some 82.000 volumes of books and journals.

  • 700 titles of journal, currently receiving 350 titles (ca. 27.000 volumes)
  • 55.500 volumes of books.
  • 16.000 pieces of non-book material (microfiches, CDs …)
  • Access to databases (Religious and Theological Abstracts, Springer LInk, Science Direct, Wiley InterScience… )
