The Faculty of Theology at the University of Ljubljana will host an international scientific conference in Celje entitled ‘Global Justice and Religion: Humanities, Social Sciences, and Interdisciplinary Perspectives’, which will bring together researchers from the fields of theology, philosophy, ethics, the humanities and the social sciences. This is a regular annual conference organised within the framework of the programme group ‘Religion, Ethics, Education and the Challenges of Contemporary Society’, led by Prof. Dr Roman Globokar.

Global justice is becoming an increasingly important issue in contemporary social, economic and political contexts. At the conference, we will seek to shed light on the role of religion, ethics and humanistic thought in addressing contemporary social, political, economic and technological challenges at the global level. We will pay particular attention to respect for human dignity and human rights, social and economic justice at a global level, the challenges of digitalisation and the development of artificial intelligence, migration and workers’ rights in a global context, care for the natural environment, interfaith dialogue, and global conflicts and efforts towards peace.

The two keynote speakers at the conference will be renowned international experts

Prof. Dr Thomas Gremsl from the University of Graz, in his lecture entitled ‘Global Justice under Conditions of Digital Transformation: A Christian Social-Ethical Perspective on Global Labour Relations and Structures of Exploitation’ (Global Justice in the Context of Digital Transformation: A Christian Social-Ethical Perspective on Global Labour Relations and Structures of Exploitation), will address issues of justice, labour and new forms of exploitation in the era of digital transformation.

Prof. Dr Franciscus Armada from the Widya Sasana School of Philosophy and Theology in Indonesia, in his lecture ‘Religion and Global Justice: What the World Can Learn from Indonesian (Southeast Asian) Interreligious Experience’ (Religion and Global Justice: What the World Can Learn from Indonesian (Southeast Asian) Interreligious Experience), will present experiences of interreligious coexistence in Indonesia and Southeast Asia and their significance for the debate on global justice.

The conference will be conducted entirely in English. Researchers and university lecturers from at least fifteen countries across Europe, Asia, Africa and North America have confirmed their attendance, enabling a comparison of different cultural, religious and academic perspectives on the issue of justice.

The conference is open to the public, and members of the media are particularly welcome to attend. Interviews with the keynote speakers, international participants and representatives of the organisers can be arranged by prior request.

Topics of particular relevance for media coverage include the impact of artificial intelligence and digitalisation on people and work, global social inequalities, interfaith dialogue and human rights, and the role of religion in promoting world peace and a more just global society.
