The year 2027 marks the centenary of the birth of Joseph Ratzinger / Pope Benedict XVI (1927–2022), whose theological work decisively shaped Catholic thought in the second half of the twentieth century and beyond. His theology unfolds at the intersection of Scripture, tradition, and reason, and is marked by a sustained concern for the question of truth, the Christological center of faith, and the ecclesial form of theology.

Ratzinger’s oeuvre resists reduction to a single disciplinary framework: it is at once biblical, dogmatic, liturgical, and fundamentally oriented toward the unity of theology as intellectus fidei. His engagement with modernity, his insistence on the intrinsic relation between faith and reason, and his articulation of a “hermeneutic of reform in continuity” continue to provoke and inspire theological reflection.

On this occasion, the Faculty of Theology at the University of Ljubljana invites contributions to an international symposium dedicated to a critical and constructive engagement with Ratzinger’s theological legacy which will take place from April 16 to 17, 2027, at the Faculty of Theology.

Areas of interest include:

  • Faith and reason; Christology and soteriology; ecclesiology and the Church as communion; liturgy as theology; biblical hermeneutics; revelation, tradition, and doctrinal development; theology and modernity; ecumenism; and the contemporary reception of Ratzinger’s thought.
