Nik Trontelj

Nik Trontelj (*1990)

He completed his undergraduate studies in history and theology at the Faculty of Arts and at the Faculty of Theology of the University of Ljubljana. In 2016, he obtained a master's degree in these fields. In the same year, he enrolled in a doctoral program at the Faculty of Theology of the University of Ljubljana, namely the Theology study program. In 2022, he successfully defended his doctoral dissertation entitled The development of fundamental theology topics at the Faculty of Theology in Ljubljana from its founding to the present day (mentor: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mari Jože Osredkar), in which he systematically presented and evaluated the fundamental influences on the development of the subject matter of Fundamental Theology in the history of the Faculty of Theology. In 2022, he became an assistant at the Department of Fundamental Theology and Dialogue and began teaching and conducting research as part of his employment. In 2025, he was first elected to the title of associate professor in the field of religious studies and religious anthropology. His main area of professional interest is the history of theological thought among Slovenian (fundamental) theologians. He also researches various aspects of Slovenian national and Church history, particularly Slovenian emigration and the relationship between the Church and the state after World War II. In addition to scientific articles on these issues, he has co-authored a monograph entitled Težka pot do pravice (The Difficult Road to Justice, Družina, 2025). As a researcher, he is a member of the research program P6-0269 Religion, Ethics, Education, and Challenges of Modern Society. He is also a member of the editorial board of the Tretji dan journal, assistant of the chief editor of the scientific journal Res novae, and a member of the editorial board of the Theological Terminology Dictionary.

Since 2020, Trontelj has also been acting as coordinator of the review of criminal convictions of priests, religious men and women of the Catholic Church in Slovenia (Faculty of Law and Economics, Catholic Institute).
